Screen Prints

The mid twentieth century saw a revolution in advertising in the US, and the pharmaceutical industry was no exception. The Sackler family, recently made infamous for their companies ruthless marketing of opioids, can trace the roots of their Empire of Pain to this period. Due to the limits the FDA has on DTC (direct-to-consumer) marketing, the company came up with a range of strategies to market to doctors, also reaching the public at large via ingenious gimmicks and stunts.

These silk screen prints feature cropped and modified selections from advertisements primarily found in mid-century medical journals. The use of screen printing is a self aware take on mass consumerism, and leverages the mediums history in re-appropriating corporate imagery.
